For flower beds, cheapest and best is compost from grass clippings and organic material. It feeds the soil and adds bulky matter which improves drainage. Wood chip's popular but if fresh it removes goodness from the soil and cats love using it as a lavatory! Stone chippings look nice new but impossible to sweep off the debris that accumulates

Basically all mulch act in the same way. They all hold water in the ground, warn the surface, and smother unwanted weeds. The material is basically up to you. Wood doesn't last as long as man-made mulch but it is eco friendly.
