Freshwater aquariums should not have ammonia. The level should always be zero. If you maintain the tank's biological filter, and if you don't overstock your tank, ammonia levels will stay at zero. Also, make sure you use tank water to clean tank implements and filters. This helps maintain the biofilter.

Any detectable level of ammonia is a problem in a freshwater aquarium. Some ammonia levels are normal when a tank is first set up, before the nitrogen cycle establishes itself (a few ppm), however ammonia levels in an establish tank is a sign that something is wrong.
