Plan. Think it through and write it down, then practice dozens of time. Keep the focus on the group as a whole (statistics are fun), or if the gathering honors one person, focus on that. Avoid embarrassing stories, obtuse references, inside jokes and anything off-color.

It's always nice to thank God in any special occasion speech, especially one at a large family gathering. Also, it is nice to thank the host, or whoever organized the event. Lastly, it is important to insert humor into any speech because there isn't one person who doesn't appreciate a good chuckle.
