A splatter movie is essentially a horror movie with lots of blood and gore. Movies such as Hellraiser, Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street would be considered splatter movies because of their content.

Some of my favorite splatter movies would have to be, (in no particular order) Planet terror, Death Proof (the scene with the car crash qualifies the whole movie trust me) as well as Machete due to be released soon it will trump all other splatter films ever written.

Splatter or gore films are known for their portrayal of gore and graphic violence. Some good examples would be the hills have eyes, hostel, and slither.

Hostel (parts 1 and 2), any of the Saw, Texas Chainsaw Massacre or the Hills have Eyes series. Any of the Friday the 13th or Rob Zombie movies as well.
