If you have had only one heavy period and your are sexually active, you may have miscarried a very early pregnancy. If you are regularly having heavy periods, you may have (benign) fibroid tumors or be starting menopause. In any case, you should check in with your doctor.

Depends on your age... many young women who have only been getting their periods for a few years have extremely heavy periods that even out later in life. However, if this is a new symptom, it should be checked out by a gynecologist, just to be safe.

You could have a heavier than normal period for many reasons. It could be a more stressful time and as a result your body is responding in this way. Endometriosis could also trigger a heavy flow.

Abnormal uterine bleeding signifies a hormonal imbalance and can indicate that menopause is approaching. Women who use IUDs for birth control also experience it. If periods are irregular, it could be PCOS. More serious causes include lupus, cervical/endometrial polyps or cancer, pelvic inflammatory disease. Talk to your doctor.
