Barbiturates are a group of drugs that work on your brain (Central Nervous System). These require a prescription since they are classified as anxiolytics and hypnotics, and may only be prescribed by qualified physicians. They are not commonly abused, and have no street name. Two drugs in this category include pentobarbital and phenobarbital.

Barbiturates are also known as downers because they depress functioning of the central nervous system. Their effects can range from mild sedation to coma. They have a narrow therapeutic range, which means the amount needed to have a therapeutic effect is close to the amount that can cause harm. Benzedrine and dexzedrine are examples of barbiturates.

Barbiturates are known as downers or sedative-hypnotics. They depress the central nervous system and make people who take them relaxed or calm. The drug also induces sleep, making them pretty dangerous to take. Most people who are prescribed barbiturates have anxiety issues. Examples of types of drugs that are considered barbiturates are Benzedrine and dexzedrine.
