A generation is defined as the average number of years between a woman's first child and the first child of her daughter. In the United States this is around 25 years. "Cultural" generations are more loosely defined, but are generally shorter in length.

This depends on how long it takes for a person to have a child and therefore create the next generation. Generally, most people consider this to be about twenty years.
