Liber or libertas is the Latin word for freedom. The name of the African country Liberia is derived from these words.

Liberia, although not a noun found in Classical Latin, would be an noun coming from the adjective liber, libera, liberum, free, and the suffix -ia, which denotes a place name. Therefore, it is a place of freedom. The -ia could come from -ium; if so, it would be plural and mean places of freedom.
