Dissociative disorder is a real mental disorder and is not made up. Basically, in the extreme form it is what people have called a split personality.

Disassociative disorder is real. This sometimes happens when a person involuntarily mentally removes himself from a traumatic situation via such things as amnesia or a separate identity. It is treatable with medication, hypnotherapy, and psychotherapy.
