You cast on from two separate balls of yarn onto the same needle, alternating stitches. You then proceed to knit the front stitches and purl the back (stockinette).

When you go to double knit you will knit one side then you will switch to the other side and knit on top of it while attaching it to itself when knitting

Double knitting creates a doublesided fabric where you are actually working on both sides of the knit at once. It is an advanced technique used to create thicker pieces. You are actually using 2 threads instead of the standard one when you are using the double knit technique. You normally see double knitting used to make winter hats, and oven mitts/pot holders.

Double knit fabrics are two pieces of fabric with knitting on both sides. Each side has a different knitting needle. Both sides use the same thread. The finished work is twice as heavy and twice the material as single knit.
