The Olympics are not designed as a money-making venue for athletes and cash purses are not awarded with the medals. Athletes from poorer countries will generally not make much profit from their efforts. Athletes in the US, UK, etc make some money through corporate sponsorships or professional team salaries.

That all depends on what country you are in. Some countries pay an athlete upt to $1,000,000 for a gold. In other country you can earn millions on sponsors.

Actually, people pay to become Olympic athletes. They are amateur athletes, not professionals, though many go pro afterwards and winning a medal is a real door opener.

Where have you been the last 25+ years?!? In 1986, the IOC changed it's charter to all "all the world's great (athletes) to participate." Pros have been competing for years, however, they do not get paid to be in the olympics, other than endorsement deals.  add a comment

Depending on the the amount of endorsement that the medalist can recieve, they can make millions of dollars and plenty of options for future endorsement. If there is little endorsement then they can make to upwards of 50,000 or more if they medal, less if they do not medal or not make the team.

The United States pays gold medal winners $25,000 for each medal. Other than that, all money they make is from endorsement deals, which depends on the individual.
