According to most reports, 1,836. This breaks down to 1,577 confirmed dead in Louisiana and 238 confirmed dead in Mississippi. This does not include the 705 people that are considered missing.

1836 deaths were directly attributed to the storm. There were no doubt additional deaths, possibly from cardiac arrest, suicide and accidents, but it is not possible to determine exactly how many. The hurricane areas were evacuated and the population scattered throughout the U. S.
