How long is an eon?

My mom is always saying I have not seen her in an eon.

She is just trying to tell you that it has been a really, really, really long time. Geologists use the word to refer to the longest possible divisions of time. However, part of the word's definition is that it is so long that it's not really measurable, so no one can actually say how long that is. But it's LONG!

An eon is the longest time period measured in geology (not counting "supereon"), but the different geologic eons have different lengths. In other contexts, an eon is one billion years.
