Martin Luther was a Catholic priest who strongly disagreed with many of the corrupt tenants of the Catholic church, including buying indulgences. He authored many influential writings preaching his own interpretation of the Bible and gained a large following, which later became known as the Reformation. He also translated the Bible into German.

During the 16th century when Martin Luther lived, it was common for the Catholic church to sell indulgences (or forgiveness for sins). Martin Luther protested this practice and posted his protest, known as the 95 Theses, on the door of his church. This sparked the Protestant Reformation because his ideas were quickly spread throughout Germany and then Europe.
