Memory functions in a way that if a person needed to remember something, they can pull it out of the store of information that they keep over the years. Sometimes, when a person is preoccupied with other things, they cannot remember things that they have learned just a couple of minutes ago.

That's a question scientists have been studying for decades. Basically, information is stored, much like a computer's memory -some is short term and some is long term or automatic. A set of events in the body triggers the brain's memory banks.
