A sluice box is a device used in prospecting to trap gold particles in a water supply or sluice that contains running water and debris. The gold particles are denser than the debris and water, which cause the valuable gold to become trapped in riffles, which are barriers at the bottom of the box.

This is fairly easy and simple. The box is just the right size to be held in your hand. You pour sane and water into the box and they pass through the holed bottom of the box like a strainer leaving behind any larger foreign objects.

as the water passes through the sluice box the gold particles which are heavier, fall to the bottom and are trapped and then easily collected

A sluice box aids in the process of gold prospecting because sand and water are shoved into the box, making it work like a sieve, sifting through for gold flakes.
