How do you weigh in on the school uniform debate?

I need some good arguments on this issue.

There are two sides, of course. Uniforms eliminate distractions by making everyone the same. They discourage individual expressing, however, and can stunt the development of individual personality traits. I think uniforms are usually a bad idea, but I can see how they help in situations where gangs are prevalent and colors are an issue.

I believe that children should wear school uniforms because it will improve their school experience by taking away the social pressure put on a student by what he or she is wearing. Styles and such will not be ruling the school day. Students will be dressed similarly, thus causing less distractions and competition between them.

In this day and age it is the safest option to have uniforms in school. With gang affiliations by clothing or places to hide weapons, I agree with it. Kids can have their own personal style outside of school and be fine.

I am pro uniforms because uniforms create a sense of community, help eradicate using clothing for status (thus keeping the focus on learning, not who's wearing what), inherently define what attire is appropriate, are less expensive and more cost effective for families, and send the message that school is important and valued by the adults in charge.
