You cause your opponent to be in checkmate when you place their king in check and they cannot either move away, capture the attacking piece, or interpose one of their pieces to stop the check. An excellent way to learn how to inflict checkmate is the paperback book from Bobby Fischer on improving your chess game at any book store.

Your King, the most important among your figurines is checked, unable to move in any direction and no other figurene of yours can block off the check¨. If this happens to you, you've just lost the game, sorry.
