How do you get rid of ivy vines growing up a tree?

Wear gloves! Cut vine at base of tree. Pull all of vine out of tree. Use an herbicide on areas you trimmed and on new shoots when they appear.

I suggest that you find where the Ivy Vine is starting and pull it straight up out of the ground by the roots. If you don't want to do that you could always get some shears or scissors and cut the vine off of the tree. That is what I would do.
