I can't get the braids close to my head.

When you do the type of braid for a cornrow, you take the hair from the center first instead of the outsides first, this allows a tight fit.

Start in the front and part hair in rows down the scalp. Twist hair down rows all the way to the back of the head. Do this to each row.
