You tell yourself "If something needs doing, I do it", and then you do. You do not permit any excuse or delay, or you fall back into old patterns.

I had the same problem and went to psychotherapy. We discussed any issues that I had going on and by having someone subjective telling me that everything I believe is true to me it helped. A lot of my procrastination stemmed from people ignoring me. It depends on why you developed the defense mechanism in the first place.
