After you donate to the charity, you can ask for a form that you must fill out and it will take a certain amount of money out of your taxes depending on how much you donate. You do not have to deduct your taxes though if you just feel like donating for free.

If you itemize your deductions, you can claim a deduction for any charitable donations. There are limits to this, however. You must have reciepts. The charity must also be one that is recognized by the IRS. You many also have to fill out some forms, and there are income limits.

If you make a donation to a charity within the year you will receive a receipt from them detailing the donation. When you file your taxes there is a place to deduct a percentage of the donation. It may be necessary for you to itemize your taxes.

Tax deductible charities are recognized by the government as being nonprofit and for providing social services or goods that the government cannot / will not offer. Thus donations to these organizations is tax deductible, because it is helping an organization do what the government can't / won't.
