How do I use a screw gauge to determine the diameter of a pilot hole?

The guage will have various "steps". Apply each and determine the largest that easily goes into the hole with and without interference. This will help determine the standard screw size.

The gauge should have holes in it with specific numbers or screw sizes it should also show fractions or numbers to indicate drill bit size.
