Using the terminal search for defaults write,com.apple.safari spacer -boot FALSE instead of >spacer< you have to add the variables of your interest for example Safari4includeFancyURLCompletionList to change the drop down but you cannot take away the searchbar in general but you can change it from dropdown.

Go to the terminal and type there in "defaults write com. apple. safari >spacer< -bool FALSE". Instead of >spacer< you have to insert the variables of your interest - for example Safari4IncludeFancyURLCompletionList to go back to the Safari 3 drop down, or Safari4IncludeGoogleSuggest for the google drop down.

May be it is not possible to take away the dropdown. But you can click the arrow on the right-side of the search box and then click "Clear history"

You cannot take away the suggestions, but I presume you probably want to remove your previous searches and history from the drop down. In the "Safari" menu, select "Reset Safari... ", there you can select to clear your history. Once cleared, your previous hits will not appear in your search drop down anymore.
