It's not as scary as it seems. Once you're up in the air it's actually really cool and the fear subsides. Bring something to read or do on the plane. Sitting there for a long time tends to make you a bit on the bored side. You will hit turbulence once and a while and it is strange.

Have your photo i. d. handy at all times. Call the airline or visit their website for what you can and cannot bring on the plane. You must remove your shoes through security so choose footwear that is easy-off-and-on. Take a good book or magazine and loads of patience.

If it is a long trip bring a pillow. If you are the kind of person that gets car sick have the barf bag ready just in case.

Pack everything a week in advance. Get to the airport at LEAST two hours before your flight is scheduled to leave, more is better. Make sure you have all ID, such as passports easily accessible. Most important, relax. The horror stories you hear about are usually exaggerated.
