How did they come up with the original Super Mario?

The original character Nintendo invented was called 'Jumpman'. His costume came from the basic need for contrast for the character to stand out on the old systems. Thus, the blue shirt and red overalls were born. The decision of his Italian origins came from his mustache: 'He has a mustache...let's make him Italian!' True story...

There is no true answer as to how they came up with Mario. I guess somebody wanted a unfit hero in the bunch.
