It's impossible to ban spiders completely, but you can discourage them by reducing prey-- insects, millipedes, etc. Check cereals/flour and woolens for beetles/moths. Examine potted plants for insects. Check bathroom and kitchen at night for silverfish/cockroaches. Clean these out and the spiders will leave, too.

Make sure all cracks are sealed. Make sure that there is no space under the doors and no cracks in between the windows and walls. If you want extra protection then have an exterminator spray spider repellent.

The non-toxic way is to get several Osage oranges and place them around your house. For some reason, spiders avoid these green, bumpy fruits.

Before you rid your house of spiders remember they eat other bugs which all houses have in the walls. If you want to get rid of them try glue traps which can be bought at a hardware or garden store. Also try horse chestnuts (conkers). Place around house.
