How can I best support my boyfriend while he is depressed?

I try to help him but it doesn't seem to work.

You just need to keep reassuring him that you are there for them and will support him in all of his endeavors and if he needs anything, to just ask you.

That depends why he's depressed. If he's got problems at work or with you or with his health etc. target the issue be there and supportive but let him deal with it on his terms. If he's got self-inflicted intellectual depression try to re-engage him with life. Take a hike!

Its hard to answer a question when you dont know what is wrong with that person. Sometimes, the best thing to do is leave them be. Some people just want their space. Talk to him. See what there is that you can do to put a smile on his face.

Try to find out the cause for depression. Go for a weekend trip out of town. A change in scene will be helpful as this will take his mind off what is troubling him. Also do something he likes very much to cheer him maybe go for a movie. Last off all take him to a counselor.

The best thing that you can do is be there to listen to him. You should try to get him to see a medical professional that is knowledgeable with treating depression. Also look up local support groups in the newspaper that offer programs for dealing with depression. They even have one for familes.
