Geocities is no longer in operation in the US, but most websites that were hosted with GeoCities have been archived by the Internet Archive. So, while they are no longer hosted by GeoCities, they are still available for public viewing. The pages can no longer be updated by their owners.

The United States Geocities shut down on October 26, 2009. It late June of that year it warned it's users and suggested other free sites. This affected 38 million user-built pages. The Geocities Japan is still available.

Geocities stopped accepting new registrations on April 23, 2009 and shut down it's US service on October 26, 2009; it went down everywhere else in the world except for Japan on October 27, 2009. To the best of my knowledge no backups were made of the 38 million websites that were hosted there. Japan's Geocities is still active.

Geocities officially closed all free accounts and services on October 29 of 2009. Existing users were offered a limited-time deal where they could buy web hosting for a reduced price of $4.99 per year.
