Cephalexin is used to treat infections that are caused by certain types of bacteria. The medication is popular in the treatment of ear infections, upper respiratory infections and urinary tract infections. The physician will determine what is causing the kidney infection and prescribe accordingly.

Since bacteria are not all the same, different antibiotics need to be used based on which bacteria is causing the problem. Cephalexin is a cephalosporin, which work by disrupting the way that the bacteria make their cell wall. If the infection is caused by MRSA, B. fragilis, Pseudomonas, Enterobacter, P. mirabilis, or a few other bacteria, it will not work.

Cephalexin may be used to treat a kidney infection, but it must be stressed that no doctor worth his or her weight in medicine is going to indiscriminantly place you on an antibiotic unless you have first had a blood culture taken to help pinpoint the specific organism and the best treament option.
