Why would a law firm hire an expert witness and not call that person at the trial?

A law firm may hire an expert witness to provide testimony as to a certain aspect of the case. If that expert witness was hired and provided testimony that was more harmful than helpful to a case, it would be a wise decision to not have that expert testify at trial.

Expert witnesses help lawyers understand the details of a case. It's possible that the expert's analysis would have 'hurt' their case, so was not used.

The most obvious reason is because the expert witness, after reviewing the case and/or evidence, did not agree with the defense. Therefore, there testimony would hurt their client more than help them.
