Why is my engine tapping?

It could be a few things, but if the engine block is tapping you may have a cylinder misfiring. It may also be a belt or other accessory that is on poorly.

Well typically tapping coming from the upper part of the engine is an indication that you have valves that need adjusted. The work there way loose as the engine gets miles on it and need to be set back to recommended clearances.

Most frequent cause is low oil level. With engine off and having sat level for a few minutes, check the oil level on the dip stick, add the recommended oil type as needed. If your oil level is ok,,,Change oil & filter. This is cheapest way to start on problem.
