Why does drinking wine make you so tired?

Answer by  NGoodson (3395)

Just like any alcoholic beverage, wine is considered a depressant, so that's why it makes you so tired and relaxed. The alcohol content is very high but it has such a light taste that you don't often realize how much you even drank and that's why you get sleepy after drinking it.

Because it has alcohol. Wine can act as a mild sedative, and depending on context and your level of excitement, it can make one feel sleepy or chatty.

Aside from the alcohol and the context in which it is usually drunk, meaning in the evening and with a meal, wine contains chemical compounds that act as sedatives. These compounds are found in the phenols and phenol byproducts that are released with air exposure. Wine, especially red wine, contain more of these active phenols.
