Why do my strut mounts make a thumping noise?

Well it sounds like you have a loose or broken strut. I would jack the car up and let the wheel droop out. Then check the components to see if there is any gap above the spring if so your springs may have sagged or you may be missing a spacer. You may need to install new springs.

The struts may not be connected right and may need to be changed out. This is often an easy fix.

There could be something wrong with them, It depends on how old the car is. You should have it checked out. You may need to get new strut mounts.

When a vehicle has more than 60k miles on it and the vehicle starts making a thumping noise when going over bumps or train tracks you need to have the shocks and struts tested.
