This could be a number of things. It could be a streched tendon, or a strained muscle. It could also be an incipent goiter (enlargment of the thyroid due to lack of sodium). If it doesn't go away in a couple of days see a doctor.

The reason for the pain you feel could be from straining the neck, either by sleeping in an awkward position, not fully resting your neck, or by tilting your head to the side for an extended period.

Is it possible that you just slept on it the wrong way? This happens to be often. Is it a tender muscle pain? If so, then that does seem to be the best answer. Try putting heat on it and taking Aleve. If that doesn't work after 2 days, call the doctor.

Sometimes, some people feel pain below their necks and that too usually on the left side, because of the reason to attend to mobile phones while working on the computer or while driving when the cell phone is between their shoulders and ears.

This sometimes take place in sleep too. Some people in their deep sleep, they turn anyside, unknowingly causes pain. Sometimes it can be due to mudcular pain too. Take some pain-reliever tablets, if not subsided, please show some doctors.
