President Richard M. Nixon went to China and began the historic steps that led to normalized relations with China. Nixon's work in relations to China is often overlooked because his presidency was so clouded by the Viet Nam war and the Watergate scandal. Many historians think this is the most important positive contribution he made.

Famously it was Richard Nixon, in February 1972, who opened relations with Mao's Communist China. Nixon's entire career developed on his conservative anti-Communist politics, so his extended personal visit to China was surprising to his supporters. This is seen as Nixon's most important foreign policy achievement.

Richard Nixon negotiated with Chairman Mao. In 1966, the People's Republic of China had a "Cultural Revolution" that attempted to eliminate all western influences. It was a disastrous period of time in China's history. Nixon's subsequent visit to China was a sign the revolution was ending.
