It is probably a dislocated jaw. It could also be due to a bone or other substance lodged in his upper mouth area. See a vet.

A dog whose jaw hurt when he opens his mouth needs to go see a vet as soon as possible to ensure nothing is broken. Feed mushy food.

Your doggie could have what is called Bone Craniomandibular Osteopathy. Terriers are the dogs most affected with a few other breeds included and most symptoms are usually noticed before the dog is ten months old. The pain resulting from this can be treated with asprin and steroids, but doesn't cure the disease.

That could be anything from a strained jaw muscle to an infected tooth to a more serious bacterial problem. Is there swelling in the jaw area? Any mucus or discharge in the dog's mouth? Is the area painful to the dog when touched? My best suggestion is to take the dog to the vet.

He needs medical treatment right away. It is not natural for them to have pain when opening the jaw and if that is the case I am sure the dog is not eating properly.
