Nike Inc., the sportswear and equipment supplier, was originally known as Blue Ribbon Sports. Blue Ribbon Sports became Nike, Inc in 1978. Blue Ribbon Sports was founded by Phil Knight and Bill Bowerman in January 1964. The company was established when Phil Knight became impressed with Tiger brand running shoes and decided to market them in the United States.

Phil Knight along with his former track coach Bill bowerman invested $500 in the year 1964 to start Blue Ribbon Sports together with Onitsaka Company to develop and Distribute running shoes. They formed Nike in 1971 when their association with Onitsaka Company came to an end.
