Marketing is a social concept, and has been around a long time. The oldest advertisements known are Greek sandals worn by prostitutes whose tread imprints said, "follow me" and some of the very earliest examples of human writing are on how to persuade, the oldest that I know of are physicians explaining how to convince patients to take unpleasant treatments.

It began with the first "lady of the night" who had to market her wares and make them attractive to potential customers.
