Peter was the guy who founded the 12 apostals and denied jesus 3 times before he was crucified. This may be the reason that peter believed he was chosen for Bishop of Rome

Simon was a fisherman in partnership with James and John. Jesus called all three as apostles. Jesus nicknamed Simon, "Rocky," or Peter because he was so solid and reliable. Peter wasn't a learned man, but he became the apostles' leader. Jesus chose him to lead the church, in spite of Peter's denial of him. Peter was martyred in Rome.
