What should I know before shipping paintings?

Answer by  Darkephoenix (1789)

Insurance, first and foremost. Just in case something happens you're covered. Make certain it's well wrapped so none of the paint scratches off, preferably in soft cloth. Then support it either with firm cardboard or flat wood boards. Bubble wrap or newspaper any gaps between the box and painting. Mark FRAGILE on package. A lot to do, worth the time.

You need protection not only from impact but from water, excessive pressure changes (jolts, shocks) and of damage to the frame.

I would make sure to get some insurance on it if it is of value. Make sure you use a quality shipping service and make sure to pack it out very well.
