Molting is a natural process for budgies and as such is no cause for alarm. However, if there are clearly visible bare patches of skin or down feathers, your bird may have parasites, dermatitis or suffer from poor nutrition. In such cases consult your vet as soon as possible.

It is normal for a parakeet to molt twice a year. You will know it is molting by looking at the birds' sheath. You should see new feathers coming up.

If he is moulting excessively it could be due to random temperature changes. Check to make sure it's not by a heat register, this could causing abnormal moulting. There are vitamins you can buy at the pet store epecially made for moulting birds.

When a bird molts it usually grows feathers in behind the lost feathers to replace them. Birds usually molt during certain times of the year. However, if your bird starts balding because of molting take it to the vet or to your local aviary as this can idicate a problem.
