The Shawnee lived in Ohio Valley in the late 1600s. The Iroquois Indians wouldn't share these rich hunting grounds and drove the Shawnees out. The settled in Illinois, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Georgia. As the Iroquois nation weakened, the Shawnee Indians moved back Ohio and settled around the lower Scioto River valley.

They originally lived mostly in parts of Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky. Like many Native American, tribes, however, they were forced off their land and moved to other parts of the country. Today the Shawnee Indians have their tribal land in Oklahoma. This is the seat of the Shawnee Nation, although Shawnee groups can still be found all over the U.S.
