General medicine or family practice physicians are the highest demand in the profession. As more and more doctors specialize, it's difficult to find a "regular" doctor.

The highest demand right now is for primary care physicians / family practitioners. This career path makes significantly less money than some of the more specialized tracks so it has been less desirable lately.

The family practice doctor is in the highest demand because in the age of HMO's where you need a referral to see a specialist, you must see your family practice doctor first to obtain a referral. I also think opthalmologists are in high demand as many people wear glasses or contact lenses.

Cardiologists are in highest demand. Orthopedic surgeons and radiologists are also in demand. Ophthalmologists, dermatologists, and anesthesiologists are in demand. Doctors in the mental health area are always needed. There is a demand for all types of doctors because of the age of baby boomers.
