For a sudden hip sprain, a dog should be treated with alternating heat and ice. Additionally, a mild pain reliever can be given every six hours.

Bed-rest, and lots of it! You should keep your dog as immobile as possible for the next couple weeks and then enter into LIGHT activity.

The veterinarian will probably tape the leg to the abdomen of the dog to keep it immobile for a period of time to allow it to heal correctly.

Keep the dog immobilized so the hip can heal. Treat the pain and inflammation with Motrin (a children's dose will do). Gently apply ice packs as well to reduce the swelling.
