As with any sport there is a safety risk involved, but if gymnastics is practiced properly and safely with qualified coaches, the right equipment and the right coaching advice it should not hold any greater risk than any similar sports. As the difficulty level increases and moves get harder, it is extremely important to have good coaches.

There are very many safety precautions. I believe the most important safety precaution is no loose clothing that could get caught on any equipment.

There's no such thing as a perfectly safe activity, even staying in bed will hurt you. If coaches and other participants used safe practices and you don't have any unusual medical conditions being active and fit is part of a healthy lifestyle and you are better off for doing it. Yes, though it is possible to be hurt, even killed.

Gymnastics facilities take significant precautions against falls causing serious harm like broken bones, such as installing soft mats and padded surfaces. However, broken bones and dislocations can occur. Sprains, torn soft tissue, and repetitive stress injuries remain common. The risk increases with the hours of practice per week and difficulty of the maneuvering.

Gymnastics is as safe as any other athletic event. The key is knowledge of ones own body, and what limits it can pushed to, and how to stop when needed.
