It was originally written in a book by John Heywood, who titled "A dialogue conteinying the nomber in effect of all the proverbes in the Englishe tongue" in 1546. This book attempted to capture the common phrases of the time. In 1521, Heywood earned 2,4000 pennies/year as the king's servant.

The phrase "a penny from your thoughts" comes from a 1546 book by John Heywood called "A dialogue conteinying the nomber in effect of all the proverbes in the Englishe tongue. " He probably didn't come up with it himself, though.
