In order for a baby to develop healthy sleep habits it is imperative that you create a schedule and stick to it. Babies learn from routines and if you are consistent from the beginning by putting the baby down at the same time each night the baby will adapt and come to rely on the schedule.

When a baby is on a set sleep schedule they are much happier. Their body conforms to the schedule and starts to get tired around the time you normally put baby to sleep. If that time is different every day then baby's body cannot get used to it.

Sleep is important for every infant. Most infants under a year old need at least 15 hours or more of sleep per day. To get your baby in a healthy sleep pattern, start a routine consisting of a warm bath, then lay him down in a crib face up with the lights dimmed and white noise in the background.

The main idea is that a baby needs to learn how to sleep on their own. In other words, the baby has to self-soothe. This means that they can/should fall asleep without their parents.
