Chloroform anesthesia was first used in 1847. It was criticized in international studies for effecting both the respiratory system and the heart badly, causing sudden deaths, which led to a decline in usage in the beginning of the 20th century. In medical literature chloroform anesthesia was mentioned as late as in 1976.
