What is the different between a memoir and a biography?

A biography starts out "he was born" and ends with "he died" or "here's where he is today." It is a comprehensive life story written by someone other than the subject. A memoir tells the story of a significant portion of one's own life and shows how the individual was transformed as the result of this experience.

A memoir would be talking about a certain portion of someone's life. A biography is much broader usually covering the entirety of someone's life. Think of a memoir as a sub category of a biography that follows a particular event.

A memoir is written by either the subject of the book, about their personal memories. A biography is written about someone else's life.
